Miami Beach residents can learn how to harvest rainwater and walk away with a $50 rebate at a free seminar Sept. 19 at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden.
The "Harvest the Rain" workshop, running from 11 a.m. to noon, is led by Solina Rulfs, an urban horticulture program specialist with UF/IFAS Extension Miami-Dade County. Rulfs will cover Florida's water resources, aquifer protection and how rain barrels reduce stormwater runoff and conserve drinking water, according to the garden's calendar.
Attendees who complete the presentation qualify for a $50 rebate toward a rain barrel for their home. The limit is two rebates per household.
The garden, at 2000 Convention Center Drive, has a full schedule that week.
On Thursday, Sept. 17, the Miami Beach Orchid Society hosts an Orchid Painting Workshop from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Artist Gloria Hernando of Latin for Glory guides participants through painting on an 8-by-10 canvas they take home. All materials and refreshments are included in the $40 ticket. No painting experience is needed.
On Friday, Sept. 18, the garden marks the International Day of Peace with a free program from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The week wraps with a free family concert on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. "Groovin' on a Sunday Afternoon: JECC and Friends" features the JECC Jazz Bootcamp Ensemble, the South Florida Center for Percussive Arts and New World School for the Arts. Nicole Yarling, founder of the Jazz Education Community Coalition, a Miami Beach nonprofit, organized the event to connect young people with jazz performance, according to the garden's Eventbrite listing.
The garden also runs weekly wellness classes on Sundays. Sound Bath Meditation with Franci starts at 9:30 a.m., followed by Gentle Vinyasa Yoga at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $20, or $18 for Subtropicalist members.
