New FHSAA Open Division adds postseason competition
The matchup comes during the first season of Florida's new Open Division playoff format, which will bring together eight of the state's highest-ranked football teams regardless of classification.
The FHSAA Board of Directors unanimously approved the format June 9, expanding the postseason championship structure across 11 team sports.
For football, the eight participating teams will be selected using the final MaxPreps rankings at the conclusion of the regular season.
The teams will be divided into two four-team pools. Pool A will include seeds 1, 4, 5 and 8, while Pool B will include seeds 2, 3, 6 and 7.
The top two teams from each pool will advance to a single-elimination championship tournament at the state finals site.
Miami Beach and American are not currently among the state's top eight teams in the MaxPreps rankings. Both remain focused on their remaining regular-season games and postseason opportunities.
South Florida high school football analyst Larry Blustein wrote Thursday, Oct. 8, that the coming weeks would be important as teams compete for district titles and postseason positioning.
