Miami Beach Parks and Recreation is offering free adaptive bowling sessions at Scott Rakow Youth Center, giving residents with special abilities a weekly training ground and a potential route to Special Olympics competition.
The city announced the program Thursday, July 30, on X, listing two weekly time slots at the center's six-lane bowling alley at 2700 Sheridan Ave. Qualifying participants will be invited to compete in local Special Olympics competitions, according to the announcement.
Sessions run Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. The program is free for Miami Beach residents.
The region already hosts the kind of events participants could work toward. Special Olympics Florida's South Region held a bowling competition at Bird Bowl Miami in April, and its next confirmed date is Oct. 3 at QC Family Entertainment, where athletes pay a $3 lane fee.
Scott Rakow Youth Center, built in 1976, serves children and adults of all ages and houses a gymnasium, ice rink, pool and fitness center alongside its bowling lanes. General admission is free for residents.
The announcement arrived the same week the city marked the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, highlighting ADA beach access, audible pedestrian signals and accessible public transportation across Miami Beach.
The city did not specify a start date or name a program coordinator. Residents can call Scott Rakow Youth Center at 305-673-7767 for enrollment details.
