Miami Beach unveils lifeguard centennial art show Nov. 5

Miami Beach will unveil a free outdoor exhibition Thursday, Nov. 5, celebrating the 100th anniversary of its Ocean Rescue Division and recognizing organizations that protect the city's coastline.

The exhibition, titled OCEAN Heroes, opens at 4 p.m. at Galería Ocean Drive in Lummus Park, along Ocean Drive between 11th and 12th streets.

The unveiling runs until 5 p.m., according to the city's official event calendar. Admission is free.

Exhibition celebrates lifeguards and coastal conservation

The exhibition marks the Ocean Rescue Centennial, commemorating the division's establishment July 9, 1926.

For a century, Miami Beach lifeguards have helped protect residents and visitors along the city's beaches.

OCEAN Heroes also recognizes what the city calls "Coastal Guardians," organizations and volunteers working to protect beaches, marine wildlife and coastal environments.

Organizations featured in the city's exhibition materials include the University of Miami, the Surfrider Foundation's Miami chapter, Miami Waterkeeper, Debris Free Oceans and Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces.

The exhibition is part of Galería Ocean Drive, an outdoor gallery curated by the Office of the Mayor and City Commission to highlight Miami Beach's history, culture and community.

The gallery previously hosted Miami Beach FREEDOM, an exhibition celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. That show opened May 21 and featured 34 panels highlighting American history and achievements.
