Bakeries from across Florida will compete for the titles of Best Baguette and Best Croissant in Florida at the National Hotel Miami Beach on Sunday, Oct. 25.
The annual competition returns to the Art Deco hotel at 1677 Collins Ave. for an evening of blind judging and public tasting, according to MiamiCurated. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m.
General admission costs $44 plus taxes and fees. That price includes one drink and samples of every finalist's baguettes and croissants, paired with artisan cheeses and charcuterie. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.
A panel of professional chefs will judge the entries and select Grand Prix winners. Attendees get a say, too: after tasting, they can vote for a People's Choice Award.
The contest is organized by French Morning Media Group and the French American Association of Crafts & Trades, known as FAACT. Sponsors for recent editions have included Paris Gourmet and its Beurremont butter brand, Icelandair, Grands Moulins de Paris and the National Hotel itself, according to the organizer's website, Frenchly.
Past finalists have traveled from Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Doral, Fort Lauderdale, Sarasota, Delray Beach and other Florida cities. The 2023 edition drew about 500 people and 19 competing bakeries to the National Hotel's poolside, according to Frenchly.
That year, Bonjour Bakery's head baker Lucas Bistoquet took the Best Baguette Grand Prix. Mario Ramírez of D'Liras in Wilton Manors won Best Croissant.
"It doesn't matter where you're from," Ramírez said after winning at the October 2023 competition. "Rigor is essential for making good viennoiseries, and I'm proud to reproduce the gestures that my father, who was a baker in Colombia, passed on to me."
Romain Dufour, a Chicago Chocolate Academy chef who served on the 2023 jury, said at the time that the competition challenged assumptions about who makes the best French bread.
The National Hotel, a 14-story landmark dating to 1939 and fully renovated in 2022, has hosted the contest since at least 2022.
