North Beach residents can learn to make their own mosquito repellent from natural materials at a free hands-on workshop Friday, Aug. 28, at the North Beach Community Compost Hub.

Instructor Priscilla Carolyn will lead the session, presented in partnership with Fertile Earth Worm Farm, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 85th Street and Collins Avenue. Participants can also pick up free compost and meet neighbors at the hub, which maintains a 24/7 drop-off bin for compostable materials.

The City of Miami Beach announced the event on Aug. 6, describing it as a chance for residents to make repellent, collect compost and connect with neighbors. The city's events calendar lists the workshop as open to all.

The workshop is free.

Carolyn is a familiar face at the hub. She led a "Simple Steps to Compost at Home" workshop at the same location on July 29, offering an evening of beginner-friendly composting instruction in the same 5:30-to-8-p.m. format.

The North Beach Compost Hub, on the left side of 85th Street at Collins, accepts food scraps and yard waste around the clock. The city's Rising Above sustainability program manages the site as part of Miami Beach's broader waste-reduction efforts.
