In Sunset Harbour, Mohamed "Mo" Alkassar opened CHŌ Funky Asian Bistro at 1209 17th St. on April 9. Alkassar, a 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurateur, previously co-ran Paya, which occupied the same space, with chef Niven Patel. CHŌ is his first solo venture under his new Mo Momentum Group, the Miami Herald reported.

"You have to give people a reason to cross the bridge these days, a little bit more than just great food and great cocktails," Alkassar told the Herald ahead of the April opening. "You need to offer a little bit of an experience, too."

The pan-Asian menu draws on Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian cuisines, organized into sections including Snacks, Raw, Dumplings & Friends and Wok. Cuban American artist MokiBaby co-designed the space, which features a pagoda-framed kitchen visible from the street, crimson-lit bookshelves and hand-painted tabletops, Miami New Times reported. CHŌ is open 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Casa Rassi, which built a following as a Miami coffee pop-up, opened its first permanent home at 2216 Park Ave. in South Beach in September, according to Miami New Times.
