Miami Beach homeowners stand to pay less for insurance after Florida approved rate cuts for four companies Wednesday.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky, who leads the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, signed off on reductions affecting more than 62,000 policies statewide, including policyholders in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, as first reported by WSVN. The cuts will take effect as individual policies come up for renewal.
Four insurers win approval for lower rates
The biggest approved decreases went to One Alliance North America and Vyrd Insurance Co., each receiving a 10.4% rate reduction. One Alliance's cut covers 17,148 policies, and Vyrd's covers 26,751. Safe Harbor Insurance Co. received a 4.1% decrease affecting 10,501 policies, and Unique Insurance Co. received a 3.2% cut affecting 8,266 policies.
"I expect to see more aggressive rate cuts in the near future and going into 2027," Yaworsky said. "OIR is receiving a flood of rate decrease requests ranging from -0.3 to -19.7."
Kin cuts South Florida rates more than 20%
Separately, Kin Insurance announced Sept. 14 that it cut homeowners insurance rates by an average of more than 20% for policyholders in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. The company called it the largest rate reduction Kin has taken in Florida.
Angel Conlin, Kin's chief insurance and compliance officer, said the company's data shows the South Florida market is getting healthier. Kin attributed the improvement partly to a sharp drop in litigation. Lawsuit rates for HO-3 policies, the most common type of homeowners coverage, fell in the three counties from 24.1% in 2022 to 2% in 2025, according to the Office of Insurance Regulation. Kin also raised its maximum insured value to $14 million, a move aimed at higher-value properties concentrated in the tri-county area.
Miami-area premiums remain among nation's highest
The rate relief matters locally. The broader Miami area, which includes Miami Beach, carries some of the nation's highest premiums. Insurify estimates the average Miami-area homeowners policy at $15,396 per year for $300,000 in dwelling coverage, compared with a U.S. average of $2,808.
Since January 2024, 48 companies have filed for rate decreases in Florida, according to Florida Voice News. Another 53 companies have requested no change. The 30-day average requested rate change is now a 4.8% decrease, compared with a 1.1% decrease one year ago and a 5.2% increase five years ago.
The office is reviewing additional filings with requested cuts ranging from 0.3% to 19.7%. Policyholders with the four newly approved companies will see lower rates at their next renewal.
