The bayside park at Bay Drive and 92nd Street in Surfside could get its old name back.

Mayor Shlomo Danzinger sponsored three resolutions at a special Town Commission session Thursday, Aug. 6, including one to restore the park's name to "Flamingo Garden" and reinstall the original plaque. The prior commission had renamed the green space "Little Bay Park" on April 14 after a resident survey, but Danzinger's resolution would undo that change entirely.

The same session also considered reestablishing Surfside's sister city relationships with the Shomron region of Israel, the city of Hialeah and the region of Chetumal in Quintana Roo, Mexico. A previous commission severed all three ties in 2025, citing the fact that the relationships were not established through Sister Cities International.

Danzinger originally forged the Shomron connection in October 2022 as a gesture of gratitude toward the Israel Defense Forces, whose rescue unit responded to the June 2021 Champlain Towers South collapse that killed 98 people. Col. Golan Vach, who commanded that IDF unit, has roots in the Samaria town of Eli, within the Shomron region.

"I thought it was important to make a statement and reach out and connect with the people of Israel," Danzinger told JNS in October 2022, when he first established the partnership.

Hialeah had passed its own resolution authorizing the relationship with Surfside to promote educational, cultural and economic exchanges.

The third item on the Aug. 6 agenda proposed revising the town's travel, transportation and meal policy for officials and employees. The agenda packet included a red-lined version showing Danzinger's proposed changes, though the specifics of those edits were not detailed in publicly available documents.

Danzinger, Surfside's first Orthodox Jewish mayor, won back the seat in an April 7 runoff election after defeating Vice Mayor Tina Paul with 50.54% of the vote, according to WLRN. He previously served from 2022 to 2024.

The park at Bay Drive and 92nd Street had active programming under the Flamingo Garden name, including a $3,000 Viva Florida Grant from the Florida Wildflower Foundation listed in the town manager's March 2026 report.

Residents who want to weigh in can attend the next regular Town Commission meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11. Those wishing to speak must complete a speaker card with the Town Clerk before the resolutions section begins. Commission Chambers at 9293 Harding Ave. holds a maximum of 99 people.
