Silvia Salinas leads tai chi classes twice a week at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, and she's one of several instructors offering residents affordable outdoor programming at the three-acre nonprofit this summer.
The garden, at 2000 Convention Center Drive, runs tai chi sessions every Wednesday and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Banyan Ballroom or on the patio lawn, weather permitting. Salinas leads the classes, which cost $15 per session and are open to all skill levels. The garden's calendar describes the class as focused on foundational movements that improve flexibility, strength and balance without straining the heart. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.
For residents looking to slow down, the garden hosts weekly restorative sound bath meditation sessions led by instructor Franci. The sessions use sound vibrations to ease tension and promote deep rest. Cost is $18 for Friends Circle members and $20 for the general public, also ticketed through Eventbrite. The specific day varies; check mbgarden.org/calendar for the current schedule. Kids get in free.
The garden and the Sunflower Society are co-presenting "Planting Artistic Seeds," a series of summer art classes for children ages 5 to 12. Teachers Winsome Bolt and Denise Marlow guide young artists in creating mixed-media pieces using objects found in nature. The classes are free, though advance registration through Eventbrite is required. Younger children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The garden also hosted a free MISO @ the Garden concert Sunday, featuring members of the Miami Symphony Orchestra. No additional concert dates have been announced; the garden posts new events as they are confirmed.
Executive Director TL Brown oversees the nonprofit garden, which offers free general admission Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The grounds feature more than 80 palm species, subtropical plants, a large event lawn and waterscapes with koi fish and turtles.
Residents can view the full schedule and register for classes at mbgarden.org/calendar or call 305-673-7256.
