A proposal for an aerial cable car connecting Miami Beach and the City of Miami cleared a city committee Wednesday, Oct. 28, as first reported by the Miami Beach Journal.

The Finance and Economic Resiliency Committee (FERC) sent the item to the full City Commission for review. Commissioner Monica Matteo-Salinas sponsored the proposal, which she first referred to the committee at the May 20 City Commission meeting.

The Journal reported that the committee advanced the item over sharp skepticism from Commissioner David Suarez, who questioned its cost and fit.

What the proposal asks for

Matteo-Salinas's referral memo asked the committee to consider public financing opportunities, private partnerships, financial sponsorships and/or appropriations that may be required to develop the initiative. She also asked the committee to recommend or initiate community outreach and procurement processes.

The cable car would require engagement with the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and any state or federal agencies with jurisdiction, according to the memo.

No fiscal impact was listed.

What comes next

The proposal now goes to the full Miami Beach City Commission. Commissioners Joseph Magazine, Laura Dominguez and Suarez also sit on the FERC, but their individual positions on the cable car item are not reflected in available records from the Oct. 28 meeting.

The date for the full Commission hearing has not been set in the records reviewed.
