Miami-based artist Edouard Duval-Carrié, fresh from representing Haiti at the 61st Venice Biennale, brings a career-spanning retrospective to Ocean Drive with a free opening reception Saturday, Aug. 1.
"From Venice with Love" opens at The Gallery at The Betsy, 1440 Ocean Drive, from 8 to 10 p.m. with live jazz by the Simon Mogul Jazz Trio featuring Grammy-nominated bassist Curtis Lundy, a Miami native, according to The Betsy's event calendar. The exhibition runs through Sunday, Nov. 15.
A Miami artist on the world stage
Duval-Carrié, born in Port-au-Prince in 1954, has lived and worked in Miami for years. His paintings and mixed-media pieces explore migration, memory, and Vodou symbolism across Caribbean history. At the Venice Biennale, which opened May 9, his work appeared in the "Creole Garden and Courtyard" section alongside pieces by Torkwase Dyson, Wangechi Mutu, and others.
He collaborated with Vanessa Selk, founding artistic director of the Tout-Monde Art Foundation, to shape Haiti's pavilion as a reflection of diasporic influence and evolving Caribbean identity, according to The Haitian Times. Ahead of the Venice opening, Duval-Carrié hosted a preview at his Little Haiti studio on Friday, April 24.
Nightly light show on The Betsy Orb
Throughout August, nightly large-scale video art mapping will project on The Betsy Orb, an illuminated installation in B Bar. The hotel also plans community engagement programming for the month.
The Betsy describes Duval-Carrié's work as a reimagining of Caribbean narratives and histories that have too often been told without the Caribbean at the center.
How to attend
The opening reception is free. Attendees can make an optional $5 donation to Zara's Center, a nonprofit founded in 2007 that serves more than 125 children ages 5 to 18 in Zimbabwe with meals, academic enrichment, and medical care. One of The Betsy's owners grew up in Zimbabwe, according to the Michelin Guide, giving the partnership a personal connection.
Lundy, the evening's featured bassist, studied music at the University of Miami before moving to New York City in the late 1970s, where he came to the attention of legendary vocalist Betty Carter.
