The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office released body camera footage Tuesday of a deputy fatally shooting 17-year-old Durrell Young at a North Beach apartment in July.

The footage, recorded from two deputies' cameras, captures the final moments of a July 24 encounter at 785 81st St. in the Biscayne Point section of North Beach. The shooting happened just before 7 a.m. that day.

According to WSVN 7News, the sheriff's office said its Special Response Team announced its presence and knocked multiple times before breaching the apartment door. The team was executing a firearm-related search warrant obtained by Homicide Street Violence Task Force detectives.

The video shows a woman inside the apartment complying with deputies' commands. Young then opened a bedroom door with a gun in his right hand and moved toward the room where deputies stood, according to Local 10. The sheriff's office said a deputy ordered Young to raise his hands, but he did not comply, and the deputy fired.

A Special Response Team medic treated Young at the scene. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics pronounced him dead.

The sheriff's office also released a photo of the handgun it said Young was carrying. Deputies said the weapon was found on the floor next to his right leg after the shooting.

Attorney says teen followed deputies' orders

Tobechuku Nwahiri, the attorney representing Young's family, told NBC6 he believes Young was complying with deputies' commands when he was shot. Nwahiri contends the entry violated Florida law, calling it a no-knock entry that the search warrant did not authorize.

"Justice looks like MDSO acknowledging where they went wrong, that there was a no-knock entry into the home and the circumstances didn't justify such an entry according to the search warrant," Nwahiri said.

Whether deputies knocked before entering is disputed. The sheriff's office said the team knocked and announced; Nwahiri maintains they did not.

Nwahiri said after watching the footage Tuesday that he plans to pursue civil rights actions but will wait for the state investigation to conclude.

Second suspect faces multiple felony charges

A second person named in the warrant, 18-year-old Valentino Berry, was taken into custody July 24. Berry faces charges including possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, cannabis possession and resisting an officer without violence, according to NBC6.

The sheriff's office said both Young and Berry were known to deputies from previous gun-related offenses. Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz told reporters both were on probation and wearing ankle monitors at the time.

State agency continues shooting investigation

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard practice when a law enforcement officer is involved in a fatal incident. No completion date for the investigation has been announced.
